Taken in Central Oregon on Hosmer Lake, just behind Mt. Bachelor, this shot was one of those happy accidents. I originally intended to come take photographs of the mountain but this lone kayaker turned into the star of the show. This blog explores what went into getting this photograph.
Understanding the Lighting
One of the key elements to consider when photographing in foggy conditions is the lighting. The soft, diffused light created by the fog can add a dreamy and ethereal quality and set the mood for the shot.
Selecting the Right Composition
The fog acted as a natural backdrop, creating a sense of depth and mystery in the image. To be honest, this was one of about 10 different shots as I experimented with where in the frame I wanted the kayaker to be.

As the kayaker glides through the mist-covered waters of Hosmer Lake, be prepared to capture the action. Use a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion of the kayak and the water droplets in the air. As an artist, it always feels a little silly to have a favorite piece, but this one continues to be mine. The colors, the fog, the location and what it means to me, this one will always have a special place in my heart and hopefully a special place on your wall.
